Starting with the changing role of information systems in business organisations and their implications for competitive advantage, the module will help you to understand important organisational and managerial concerns in the development, implementation and effective management of information systems.

Information systems and technologies play a central role in today's global business environment. This course will enable students to appreciate the strategic role of information systems in business organisations. It explores a range of critical management and organisational issues in the design, implementation and effective use of information systems. The course also makes extensive use of real-life case studies to highlight the business opportunities and management/organisational challenges faced by organisations in relation to information systems and technologies.

The present module is created in full accordance with national educational standards in the field of the higher and postgraduate education, requirements of QAA UK (Quality Assurance Agency). Professors, famous in the academic world of Great Britain, the USA and Europe, took part in development of the program. The original version of the module is developed in English.

Developers of the module assume that the student already has the basic higher finished or incomplete education, is able to work independently with printing and online materials, has access to libraries, including online libraries, and also has the high level of self-discipline and motivation. Experience on the chosen subject matter is not obligatory. Knowledge of English at the level of ability to read literature is not obligatory, but it is desirable.

Module is developed for completely independent studying.

It is supposed that for successful assimilation of a training material of the module the student has to spend about 30 hours.

For a successful completion of the module the student has to execute and protect ONE written work or ONE task (usually it is work of 1,500-2,000 words +/-10%. Work shall be performed in English or in Russian.

Upon successful completion of this modules the student will receive the following type of certificate:

1. Introduction to Information Systems (IS):IS as Social Systems

In this session we will introduce the concept of information systems as social systems where people interact with technology. As you study this and reflect on your own experiences with information systems at your workplace, you will hopefully realise the significant implications of such a conceptualisation. If information systems are social systems, then we should be concerned about the impacts they may have on people, process and the organisational context.

2. IS & Competition:Aligning IS with the Business

In this session, we will move on to explore how information systems can help provide a competitive advantage for business organisations, and ask if indeed such advantages can be sustainable in the long run. In doing so, we will explore various theories that can be used to explore the competitive impacts of information systems. We will also focus on the critical importance of aligning information systems with business strategies. As you study this Course, you will realise that IS-business alignment is a central concern of the discipline of information systems. We will examine strategic alignment theory as well as a range of other approaches that can help to build bridges between information systems and business objectives and strategies.

3. Information Systems Development:Business Alignment

Information systems-business alignment This session will focus on the critical importance of aligning information systems with business strategies. As you study this Course, you will realise that IS-business alignment is a central concern of the discipline of information systems. We will examine strategic alignment theory as well as a range of other approaches that can help to build bridges between information systems and business objectives and strategies.

4. Sourcing Strategy for IS: Management of IS Outsourcing.

This session will focus on sourcing strategies for IS. In particular, we will examine the phenomenon of information systems outsourcing and offshore or international outsourcing. Here we will examine opportunities and risks associated with outsourcing as well as the challenges of managing outsourcing relationships. 

5. Is Success & Failure:IS Implementation;Managing Global IS

In this session, we analyse why systems fail or succeed and examine relevant change management theory. We will also explore the unique implementation challenges posed by complex, and often global, systems such as enterprise applications.

6. Case Study

In this session we will focus on a Case Study.

7. E-commerce Strategy

This session will explore electronic business strategies and models and argues that success in e-business will require a fundamental rethinking of existing business structures as well as strong relationships with suppliers and customers.

8. Realising the Business Value of IS

This session will address the critical issue of obtaining business value for information systems. Here, we will explore the concept of the ‘IT productivity paradox’ as well as assess different approaches to information systems evaluation.

9. Social & Ethical Implications of IS

Here, we will examine the social and ethical implications of information technology. As we seek to put information systems in their social context, it is vital that we are aware of the manifold impacts of information systems on our societies, both positive and negative.

10. Revision 

Students are advised to review all previous materials and activities on the course.

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • View IS as social systems and recognise the links between IS and organisational structure, culture and processes.
  • Use a range of theoretical frameworks to examine the potential for creating competitive advantage through IS.
  • Recognise the significance of IS-business alignment and apply a range of IS planning frameworks.
  • Outline and evaluate a range of approaches to IS development and assess the opportunities and risks presented by IS outsourcing.
  • Identify the key reasons for IS success or failure and outline a range of strategies for effective implementation of systems.
  • Recognise the business benefits of the Internet and evaluate a range of e-business strategy frameworks.
  • Outline the different approaches to IS evaluation.
  • Evaluate key social and ethical implications of IS.
